The school was established in August 1928 by about ten parents and Mr. J.D Fick.  It was decided that learners were to be included in the Afrikaans-medium school that was planned to be opened in Wynberg, from January 1930.

The Masonic Hall in Pier road and the NG Church Hall were hired as the first premises for the school.  Mr. Fick, who was the principle, and two teachers started the school in January 1930 along with 90 learners.

Constantia, which was in Wynberg, was the name of the farm that belonged to the Governor Simon van der Stel. In a committee meeting the name "Simon van der Stel" was proposed as an appropriate name for the new school.  The name was approved and confirmed on the 4th of June 1930.

The school Committee's first task was to find a suitable site for the school.  The Department of Education notified the committee that Waterloo Green, a plot of land belonging to the Defense Force may become available for sale. The plot of land was bought for R 2,500 at the end of 1931.  Waterloo Hut was the house on the plot that was occupied by Colonel Wakefield and built during the 2nd Boer War.  The house was altered to allow for seven classes and was ready for occupation at the beginning of 1932.

After many negotiations it was decided that in 1933 a new school building was to be built at a cost of £700.00 or around R 14,200.00 and construction began.  The new school consisted of 6 classrooms, a woodwork room, a sports room, offices, locker rooms, bathrooms and separate entrances for boys and girls marked as “Boys” and “Girls” embossed above the entrances.

In 1948 the motto and emblem were designed. The motto and way of Life "Truth wins" is still followed with pride today at Simon van der Stel Primary.  Simon van der Stel is presently the only Afrikaans-medium primary School in Wynberg, Southern Suburbs.

Simon Van der Stel Primary have commenced with admissions for English Grade R and Grade 1 classes. The classes will start in January 2020.
